5 Top Tips To Keep Tires From Tiring Out On You

Before you take that summer road trip with the kids and most of what you own packed up in the car, check out these Top 5 Handy Tips we have gleaned from the experts.

We checked out what the leading tire manufacturer had to say along with the RMA (that is the Rubber Manufacturer Association-try to keep up), and have found these five essential tips to help keep you safe, headache free, and with a few extra dollars in your pocket.

1. All the experts agree; check your tires monthly and before a long road trip (along with your belts and hoses).
• This includes proper pressure. For normal loads most experts suggest following the car manufacturers tire pressure suggestions. This is usually listed on the driver’s doorframe. For big loads see your owners’ manual. DON’T check tire pressure after you’ve been driving; this will give you a higher pressure than when the tire is cool.
• Check for bulges and protruding objects. This includes looking for “wear bars” that tell you it’s time to buy new tires (they look like narrow strips of smooth rubber across the tread)
• Look for uneven wear pattern on the tire. Run your hand on the tread; if they feel uneven this could mean your alignment is off.
• Warmer temperatures outside increase tire pressure inside.

2. Check the Spare;
• There’s nothing worse than realizing your spare is the old flat you never got around to fixing last time.
• Make sure it has the correct pressure.

3. Rotate your tires regularly
• This will increase the life of your tires and may even help with gas mileage.

4. Don’t tread too thin
• The old trick still works; stick a penny into the tread on your tires; if there is space between Abe’s head and your tread, the tire is dead. Time for new tires (and maybe a new poet)

5. Remember we’ve put on a little weight this year? Your tires can only operate safely if the weight of your load is safe.
Check the manual for maximum recommended vehicle weight. You’d be surprised how many pounds you may be throwing into the car for your summer road trip. Play it safe, and stay light on your tires.

Follow these simple guides and rest assured you’ve secured a safe fun driving experience. Now if you can just get the kids to quiet down for a minute.
